TUNIS, April 21 (Xinhua) -- Tunisian security forces have dismantled a drug trafficking network active in Tunisia's southwestern province of Gafsa, arresting six individuals, the Tunisian National Guard said Monday on its Facebook page.

"Security units from the Judicial Police Brigade in the town of Metlaoui have arrested six individuals in connection with a drug trafficking operation targeting the youth people," it said.

The operation was launched following intelligence received about a suspect involved in distributing narcotics. After a series of investigations, authorities were able to identify the individual and locate his residence.

In coordination with the public prosecution, police raided the suspect's home, where they apprehended him along with five other individuals.

During the search, officers seized 45 pieces of cannabis, nine plastic bags of heroin, various narcotics, and sharp instruments.

The statement didn't specify the exact timing of the operation or reveal the identity of the suspects.

The public prosecution had authorized the suspects' detention pending investigation.

The Tunisian government has taken a strong stance against drug trafficking, arresting hundreds of individuals involved in the crime during recent nationwide operations.
