Before the launch of Genesis luxury brand in 2015, Sonata used to be the company's flagship sedan. Sonata is currently in its 8th iteration, launched in 2020. Three years after, Hyundai has given it an update that is much "more than a simple facelift". and its N Line variant have made global debut with a radical new design that resembles India-spec Verna with their front fascia.

- New Design Language, More than a facelift

Radical new changes are not only limited to exteriors of but carry over to its interiors as well. Official pictures of 2024 Sonata are out, while a full-fledged debut is likely to happen at Seoul Mobility Show from March 30th to April 9, 2023. North American market debut will take place at New York International Auto Show on April 9th.

For starters, this is a facelift of outgoing 8th-generation model and not 9th gen model. Outgoing 8th gen Sonata stayed true to 6th and 7th-generation models, while upcoming facelift is completely radical. N line model takes the bar up with sporty alloys, a quad exhaust tip, a rear diffuser and more.

Sonata had a distinct chrome element that engulfed its headlights running into its bonnet shut line, lower window beltline, upper window line and merge into its A-pillar. It is consistently present on 6th, 7th and pre-facelift 8th generation models, and is now ditched in favour of a meaner front profile with headlights positioned below its wide LED light bars.

If this face is ringing a bell in you, you're bang on the money as it looks similar to the recently launched India-spec Verna. Side profile is vastly reminiscent of outgoing pre-facelift Sonata. It has curvaceous lines, complemented by a brand new alloy wheel design.

At the rear, we now have Hyundai's recent 'H' element tail light with a connecting light bar, similar to Verna. Actual brake lights seem to be inspired by pixelated design language from Ioniq 5. On the inside, comes closer to a Genesis in terms of fit and finish and overall sense of luxury.

Specs & Features

Dashboard design is now revised to include two angled 12.3" horizontal displays : One for infotainment and the other for instrumentation. There is a third gloss black plastic element beside instrument cluster which can be a camera to monitor driver fatigue. Or it can be a projector to display a holographic personal assistant.

Gear selector is now mounted behind a 3-spoke steering wheel. It adheres to Hyundai's recent design trends with four dots replacing Hyundai badging on steering wheel. There is a Bose-branded stereo system as well.

A sole 2.5L turbo petrol powertrain is likely to be on offer with . This engine is good for 290 bhp of power and 421 Nm of torque. There is a 1.6L turbo engine option with outgoing model too. Going by rumour mills, this engine might be discontinued. For the first time in Sonata's lifespan, Hyundai is offering AWD as well, which was recently spied.
