MEXICO, Pampanga, May 10 (PIA) -- Department of Public Works and Highways Pampanga 1st District Engineering Office completed the Mexico Bridge replacement project along Jose Abad Santos Avenue in barangay San Antonio.

Included in the scope of work in the construction of the 27.80 linear-meter bridge were the installation of drainage and slope protection structures, water proofing of the deck slab, and thermoplastic markings.

"Right after we finished the bridge deck's replacement in January this year, we immediately opened Mexico Bridge to traffic because it is a vital arterial road used by all types of vehicles including cargo trucks coming from Nueva Ecija and neighboring areas headed to San Fernando, Pampanga and to other Western Central Luzon provinces," District Engineer Almer Miranda said.

"In order to ensure the structural integrity of the bridge especially during inundations, we also provided a concrete slope protection with steel sheet pile foundation at the banks of the waterway and near the bridge approaches," he added.

The use of sheet piles in the concrete slope strengthens the substructures of the bridge and enhances the soil retention at the bridge abutment.

It will also help in preventing erosion around the wings and under the abutments of the structure. (CLJD-PIA 3)
